Lituus

Science and Technology Building, Pierce College, Lakewood, Washington.

20010   Lituus, dichroic glass, aluminum and stainless steel, 60’ x 30’ x 30’.

Lituus is a nintey-foot long asymmetrical spiral that adds a lyrical gesture to the buildings lower wintergarden in plan and elevation. The sculpture creates a sense of dynamic movement and implies an ongoing process in space and time. The upper stairs, balconies, bridge and windows reveal dramatically changing views creating an inspiring volumetric experience. The mathematics behind the creation of an asymmetrical spiral are explored in both the astronomy and mathematics class rooms.
